In mijn jeugd creëerden sprookjes en Disney-films een verwachting van moederliefde. Deze verwachting werd versterkt door mijn christelijke opvoeding, waarin loyaliteit aan je familie en het eren van ouders centraal staat.
Moederliefde is echter niet vanzelfsprekend. De relatie tussen ouders en kinderen kan ernstig worden verstoord, bijvoorbeeld door psychische problemen, zoals bij mijn eigen moeder het geval is.
De videoinstallatie en essay ‘Maar het blijft wel je moeder’ laten zien hoe het eeuwenoude ideaalbeeld van de zorgzame moeder kan leiden tot verwarring, schuld en innerlijke conflicten. Met mijn persoonlijke verhaal, gekoppeld aan stereotiepe voorbeelden, bevraag ik of moederliefde wel zo zeker en onvoorwaardelijk is.
In my childhood, fairy tales and Disney films shaped my expectations of motherly love. This ideal was reinforced by my Christian upbringing, where loyalty to family and honouring parents were central values.
But motherly love is not always guaranteed. The relationship between parent and child can become deeply disrupted, for example due to mental health issues, which was the case with my own mother.
The video installation and essay 'Maar het blijft wel je moeder' (But she is still your mother) shows how the centuries-old ideal of the caring mother can lead to confusion, guilt, and inner conflict. Through my personal story, interwoven with stereotypical examples, I question whether motherly love
is truly certain and unconditional.
